I am writing to strongly oppose the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007, and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025. These changes represent a dangerous step backward for environmental protection in Ontario.
Stripping habitat protections, narrowing definitions, and expanding exemptions only serves to benefit developers and industry, at the direct expense of species already pushed to the brink. The use of a conservation fund as a substitute for on-the-ground protections is especially troubling. It allows destruction to proceed unchecked, with no guarantee that meaningful conservation will happen where it’s needed.
Ontario should be strengthening its commitment to species protection, not weakening it under the guise of efficiency. These changes are short-sighted and risk irreversible damage to ecosystems that cannot afford further loss.
I urge you to withdraw these proposals and uphold the integrity of the Endangered Species Act.
