This sounds like a terrible idea. The existing legislation has been put in place to ensure threats to vulnerable species are assessed before any development begins so that this development does not impact these species. If it slows development, this is done on purpose to ensure sufficient care and thought are employed. Rushing into irreversible destruction of spaces critical to vulnerable species is not the answer. Also, the rules around species protection should not include practices that are “voluntary” or subject to change at the whim of the government. The rules should be science-based and established by conservation experts, not subject to the changeable priorities of a government. Once the habitat of vulnerable species is gone, it is gone forever. There are other ways to fix our housing crisis than to build there. We need to be building an Ontario for generations to come, not just making quick fixes for the next election cycle.
