I disagree with the proposed changes to Ontario's ESA. Shortening habitat protection timelines and expanding exemptions for development will weaken recovery efforts for at-risk species. These changes shift the focus away from science-based conservation and increase the risk of habitat loss potential. Ontario should strengthen protections, not reduce them, especially at a time when biodiversity is already under threat. I further expect these changes to not meet federal requirements for protection of species at risk that are required. These changes also do not appear to support federal requirements and expectations for species protections in Ontario under the Species at Risk Act. This I expect will result in regulatory nightmares and wasted time and money on inefficient protection.
