I am strongly opposed to the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025 in Ontario. These proposals weaken protections for at-risk species and prioritize economic and development interests over ecological preservation. By reducing the power of scientific assessments and allowing increased flexibility for industry, these changes undermine the core intent of the original Act—to provide science-based, effective protection for endangered and threatened species. Instead of safeguarding biodiversity, the proposals create loopholes and delay meaningful conservation action, putting vulnerable ecosystems and species further at risk. I urge the government to maintain the integrity of the current legislation and strengthen, rather than dilute, environmental protections.
