I believe that Ontario’s current legislation for endangered species and conservation—such as the Endangered Species Act—was created to protect habitats, wildlife, insects, fish, birds, waterways, and natural landscapes. These laws are intended to safeguard the ecosystems that species at risk depend on, helping them survive, recover, and thrive in the province.
While I understand the need for housing, it should never come at the cost of protected areas. Allowing easier access through simplified registration processes and shortened timelines for new developments opens the door for continued pressure to weaken environmental regulations. Once these natural areas are lost, they cannot be easily replaced—restoring ecosystems and creating new habitats takes decades, if not longer. In a time when we are fully aware of the irreversible environmental damage already done, further loosening of protections only serves to benefit profit-driven developers at the expense of our natural world.
