Dear Premier Ford,
I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025. I believe this bill, in its current form, poses significant risks to Ontario's environment, species at risk, and democratic processes.
Specifically, I am profoundly troubled by the following aspects of Bill 5:
* Weakening of Species at Risk Protection:
* The proposed repeal of the Endangered Species Act and its replacement with a potentially less stringent Species Conservation Act is deeply concerning.
* The narrowed definition of "habitat" and the shift towards a registration-first approach for development projects threaten the survival of vulnerable species.
* The potential transfer of species listing decisions to the Cabinet undermines scientific expertise and risks political interference in conservation efforts.
* Creation of Special Economic Zones:
* The broad powers granted to the Cabinet to exempt projects from provincial laws and municipal by-laws within these zones raise serious concerns about environmental deregulation and the erosion of local governance.
* This creates a situation where proper oversite is removed, and will lead to environmental destruction.
* Streamlining of Project Approval Processes:
* While streamlining processes can be beneficial, the proposed changes risk prioritizing economic development over environmental protection and thorough impact assessments.
I urge you to reconsider the proposed changes in Bill 5 and prioritize the protection of Ontario's natural heritage and the integrity of our democratic processes. I request that the government engage in meaningful consultations with environmental experts, Indigenous communities, and concerned citizens to ensure that any legislative changes are balanced and responsible.
Ontario's environment is a valuable asset, and it is a resource that needs to be protected for future generations. Bill 5 as it is written, is an attack on that principal.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter the fact this is trying to be done underhanded is disgraceful, and just as awful as trying to destroy the green belt! Stop trying to destroy our province, it’s not progress when you’re destroying our land and taking Canadians rights away. This is a complete Donald Trump move!!
