Repealing Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, 2007, marking the end of meaningful protections for endangered, threatened and special concern species in Ontario is not only a cowardly act, but it is short-sighted and not Ontarian! Using the US tariffs as a shield to this incomprehensible decision to continue to benefit the wealthy landowners and developers in the province while you ignore the majority of Ontario citizens is undemocratic. Aside from this obvious and regretful decision the Government of Ontario is making, there are three important policy reasons to preserve the Ontario Endangered Species Act:
1. Human and environmental health: Endangered species often play crucial roles in their habitats, such as pollination, seed dispersal, and maintaining food chains. Preserving these species helps sustain healthy ecosystems, which in turn supports clean air, water, and soil.
2. Biodiversity sustainability: The Act helps safeguard the diverse range of species in Ontario, ensuring that ecosystems remain balanced and resilient. Protecting endangered species prevents the loss of unique genetic resources and maintains ecological integrity.
3. Cultural and Economic Value: Many species have cultural significance to Indigenous communities and contribute to Ontario's natural heritage. Additionally, healthy ecosystems can boost tourism and recreation, while providing economic benefits to local communities.
Please, do not change this important legacy for our current and future generations.
