I strongly oppose the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the Species Conservation Act, 2025. These changes risk weakening critical protections for species at risk by allowing for more exemptions and reliance on mitigation measures, which often fail to adequately safeguard habitats and biodiversity. Conservation policies must be based on robust scientific evidence and prioritize the long-term health of ecosystems over short-term economic or political interests. The government should focus on strengthening protections and addressing the root causes of species decline, rather than rolling back essential safeguards.
