I am writing to say how strongly I oppose the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, also known as Bill 5. Although I recognize that the goal of this measure is to boost economic expansion, I have serious concerns about the potential long-term effects it may have on public health, environmental protections, and the rights of Indigenous communities in Ontario.
The bill runs the risk of weakening important environmental protections that save endangered species and their ecosystems by eliminating the Endangered Species Act and switching to a "registration-first" strategy. This modification might permit detrimental development initiatives to move forward without adequate monitoring or assessment of the wider ecological effects.
In addition, I'm concerned about how weaker safeguards and engagement obligations can erode Indigenous rights. Having a say in choices that impact their land, water, and future generations is crucial for Indigenous communities.
I implore the government to reevaluate the clauses in Bill 5 and give sustainable development - which strikes a balance between economic expansion, environmental protection, and the rights of Indigenous peoples a priority. Ontario must proceed with initiatives that will safeguard our planet and its communities for future generations.
