Dear Premier Ford and Cabinet,

Having reviewed the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act, I am deeply concerned for the safety of the environment, Indigenous communities, and wildlife in Ontario. This seems to be another "Greenbelt Strategy" to push through the priorities of business without any regard for the short and long-term implications and the rights of people and species. I am deeply disappointed that in an era of climate crisis, the Ford government continues to ignore the health and well-being of our environment, natural life, and Indigenous communities. As I understand, the bill proposes to:

- Gut environmental assessment processes.

-Fast-track mining and infrastructure development — including in ecologically sensitive and contested areas like the Ring of Fire — without proper consultation or consent from Indigenous communities.

-Adopt a “register-first, ask-questions-later” model for species-at-risk permits, allowing developers to proceed before environmental implications are fully known (very concerning, and Ford-like!)

- Establish “special economic zones” where Cabinet can exempt areas and companies from applicable laws – a move that raises serious concerns around transparency, accountability, and environmental stewardship (again, very concerning and Ford-like!!)

While I have been a supporter of the Ford government in the past, I will not support a government with long-term goals for industry and development (whether this is couched in "need for housing", "economic development" and so on). We are at a critical point in our managment of natural resources, land, and preservation of endangered species. We are also trying to build better relationships with Indigenous communities, empower, and make reparations. Why are you doing this? It doesn't make logical sense, but it does smack of political agenda and profit above all else. Don't do it. Just don't.
