The ESA program registration is complex and requires a thoughtful approach to protect endangered species in areas of potential development. The proposed changes removes the responsibility of registrants to research and consider the habitats and environments of animals and plants. Altering the program to be a voluntary registration of species turns the tables from at risk ecosystems being defended to defendant. This change will increase the risk of vulnerable populations being under reported and overlooked. The point of the act is to before anything else enforce protection. The next step is the accountability in planning proposed development.
Currently the ESA has an integrated system where the health of our endangered species including the wellbeing and diversity of our environment is considered.
The ESA makes the planners and developers consider more than just their financial interests. Yes, we need more places for people to live, but not at the expense of our natural environments.
