I am overwhelmed by the implications of Bill 5 with respect to the Endangered Species Act and the democratic process generally. I am greatly concerned about the introduction of this Bill and the plan to push it through quickly without due sober consideration.
This omnibus bill is overreaching and sets Ontario back decades. Placing decisions in a small number of people rather than in the Ontario Legislature, along with public input, erodes democracy and is, in my opinion, a dangerous move. I urge you not to pass Bill 5. Bill 5 does not protect Ontario but it may make it easier for some individuals to over-ride the Legislature, public and expert input and Indigenous right for informed consent. It is possible for Bill 5 to result in the destruction of natural lands, Indigenous rights and the democratic process itself.
