The proposed changes that allow the government to remove species at risk, redefine habitat, and remove harass from the act are anti science and are open to abuse. The fact that the government can ignore the findings of the scientists makes no sense when the purpose of the act is to protect species at risk. Some development does need to be restricted if its not for the public good and causing extinction is not in the public good. The proposed redefinition of habitat ignores the broader context that an animals habitat is part of a larger inter linked system, the new definition is too narrow and leaves openings for abuse. The removal of harass from the act is an open invitation for interested parties to drive animals out of areas that are marked for development.
Overall the proposed changes are a blatant attempt to open the environment for further exploitation to the detriment to species at risk. The proposed changes should be discarded.
