The “Special Economic Zones” (SEZ) Act in Ontario raises serious concerns about transparency, environmental oversight, and equitable development. While it is framed as a tool for economic growth, its vague criteria and expedited approvals echo the same backroom, developer-driven approach seen in the Ford government’s Greenbelt scandal. These zones risk bypassing local planning processes and environmental protections - undermining public trust and enabling private interests to shape land use behind closed doors. If Ontario truly seeks sustainable prosperity, it must prioritize integrity, public engagement, and ecological stewardship - not repeat the mistakes of the Greenbelt debacle.
