I am writing to express my strong opposition to Schedule 8 of the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025, which proposes amendments to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, 2023. This schedule would exempt all projects associated with the Ontario Place redevelopment—including any off-site initiatives that support it—from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993.
Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights guarantees a basic level of public consultation and transparency before the Government of Ontario can proceed with proposals that carry significant environmental implications. Schedule 8 would dismantle these safeguards in the context of Ontario Place, effectively silencing public input and withholding critical information from the communities most affected.
Stripping away environmental oversight and public participation to fast-track redevelopment serves private interests, not the broader public or our environment. Ontario Place is a cherished public asset in Toronto, and decisions regarding its future must remain accountable, transparent, and environmentally responsible.
I urge the Government of Ontario to protect democratic engagement and environmental integrity by removing Schedule 8 from the proposed legislation.
