I have deep concern regarding the proposed Bill 5, "Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025." I, along with many other Ontarians, believe this bill poses a significant threat to our province's environment.
Specifically, I am troubled by the following aspects of the proposed legislation:
Weakening of Endangered Species Protection:
The proposed replacement of the Endangered Species Act with the "Species Conservation Act" raises serious concerns about diminished protections for at-risk species.
The narrowing of the definition of "habitat" and the removal of explicit recovery and stewardship goals are particularly alarming.
The increased discretionary power given to the Cabinet regarding species listing undermines scientific assessments.
Creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs):
The potential for SEZs to be exempted from provincial environmental safeguards is deeply concerning. This could lead to irreversible environmental damage.
Streamlining Project Approvals:
While streamlining may seem beneficial, I fear it will result in inadequate environmental assessments and protections.
Reduced Indigenous Involvement:
It is vital that Indigenous involvement in environmental decision making is maintained and strengthened, not reduced.
I urge you to reconsider this bill and prioritize the protection of Ontario's natural environment. The long-term consequences of weakening environmental protections will far outweigh any perceived short-term economic gains.
I respectfully request that you withdraw Bill 5 and engage in meaningful consultations with environmental experts, Indigenous communities, and the public to develop policies that balance economic development with environmental sustainability.
