While I understand the desire to streamline approvals for housing and infrastructure, it's critical to remember that environmental and endangered species protection orders are not just bureaucratic obstacles—they are safeguards for our ecosystems, biodiversity, and future generations. These protections help ensure that development does not come at the irreversible cost of species extinction or long-term environmental degradation.
There's growing concern that efforts to weaken or abolish these acts are being driven not by a genuine need for affordable housing, but by the interests of developers seeking to maximize profits. Too often, the resulting housing developments are expensive, inaccessible to first-time homebuyers, and poorly integrated into sustainable urban planning. Pushing through environmentally harmful projects under the guise of addressing housing shortages ultimately benefits a few at the expense of many—and of the planet.
A new approach to conservation should prioritize meaningful integration of environmental protection into development planning, ensuring that growth is not only faster, but also smarter, more equitable, and sustainable in the long term.
