I am writing a a concerned citizen and resident of Ontario to express my dismay with the proposed Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. This legislation will undermine Ontario’s natural heritage, democratic processes and Indigenous rights.

Bill 5 proposes to repeal the Endangered Species Act — one of the few tools Ontario
has to protect at-risk wildlife and the ecosystems they depend on. Maintaining the integrity of our ecosystems is vital for human health and well-being. This requires protecting the home of the most vulnerable creatures. Biodiversity is a fundamental cornerstone for a healthy environment. Ontario needs stronger safeguards, not weaker ones. .

There does not seem to be a good rationale for the creation of “special economic zones”. Environmental assessments are a tool to ensure that ensures that development is environmentally sound and sustainable in the best long-term interest of Ontario. It is therefore short-sighted to create a mechanism for approving major development projects without due process, including, public input or Indigenous consultation. This undermines transparency, accountability and Ontario’s duty to uphold Indigenous rights and treaties.

As the population grows and climate warms, it is in the interest of Ontarians to have greater environmental protection. Good governance also requires full and open public participation in decisions that affect the province’s land, water and future. As proposed, Bill 5 will sideline community voices, marginalize science and erase decades of environmental progress.

I urge the Ontario government to withdraw Bill 5 in its entirety and to work with environmental experts, Indigenous leaders and the public to improve the process and strengthen our systems of environmental protection.

Protecting nature is not a barrier to economic growth. It’s the foundation of a healthy, resilient and just society.
