Bill 5 is a blatant rollback of environmental protections in Ontario. Replacing the Endangered Species Act with a watered-down Species Conservation Act strips away meaningful safeguards for at-risk wildlife. The creation of “special economic zones” exempts developers from key environmental regulations, prioritizing short-term profits over long-term ecological health. This bill undermines habitat protections, weakens enforcement, and sidelines scientific oversight, all under the guise of economic growth. Ontario needs stronger, not weaker, environmental laws to protect biodiversity and ensure a sustainable future. Bill 5 is a step in the wrong direction.
