I am writing to express my deep concern and firm opposition to the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007, and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025. These proposals appear to prioritize development and industry interests over the urgent need to protect Ontario’s most vulnerable wildlife.

Weakening protections, delaying recovery planning, or creating loopholes for habitat destruction undermines decades of conservation progress. At a time when climate change and habitat loss are accelerating species decline, we need stronger safeguards rooted in science—not diluted laws that offer only the appearance of protection.

Replacing the Endangered Species Act with legislation that lacks enforceability, transparency, and independent oversight will not serve the public interest. True conservation means respecting our responsibility to protect species and ecosystems for future generations—not making it easier to sideline them.

I urge decision-makers to listen to ecologists, Indigenous communities, and the thousands of Ontarians who value biodiversity. Abandon these short-sighted changes and uphold the original spirit and strength of the Endangered Species Act, 2007.
