A registration-first approach is ridiculous and undermines any potential safeguards in place, let alone the few left standing after these proposed changes. The fact this is even being considered is telling that these changes are designed to rewrite the rules to suit development over long term safety of not only endangered species but Ontarians as a whole.
It is also troubling that the government removing these checks and allowing itself to decide what is or is not endangered, rather than a science-focused group maintaining these classifications, opens the whole idea of any body overseeing endangered species as easily seen as redundant and removable in the near future following these changes. The whims of the government superseding any evidence and potentially the will of the people.
A more sensible solution would be to increase funding for offices handling the current oversight, which is partially addressed in funding volunteers, but falls short if there is a lack of volunteers and handling "red tape" to expedite the process should not be given to unpaid workers for numerous reasons.
These proposed changes should also have more time to be discussed and worked out before implementing as the current state appears to be pressing forward with a mentality of fixing things later at best, and wilfully including loopholes to circumvent any protections entirely at worst. It insists minimal care for the problems that will arise in a transition so vaguely designed.
