I do not agree with the proposed Bill 5 in Ontario as it raises serious concerns regarding Indigenous rights and sovereignty. The bill appears to disregard the constitutional duty to consult and accommodate Indigenous Peoples, a principle that is foundational to reconciliation efforts and the recognition of Indigenous self determination. Legislation that affects land, resources, or governance without meaningful consultation perpetuates a legacy of systemic exclusion and marginalization. Indigenous communities must be full partners in decision making processes that impact their traditional territories and rights. Bill 5, in its current form, undermines this partnership and threatens to erode trust, setting back the progress made toward a more just and equitable relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the Crown.
