Hello,
I write to provide comments on the “Proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and a proposal for the Species Conservation Act, 2025”, ERO # 025-0380.
I do not support the proposed changes outlined in the proposal. I have significant concerns with the following:
1. Registration-first approach – this will likely cause more harm on species at risk and/or their habitat.
2. Species Classification and Listing – the government should not have the power to add/remove species to the list of protected species. This should be based on scientific-evidence and by qualified experts.
3. Redefining “Habitat” – the new proposed definition is very narrow and will likely increase harm to species and expedite species decline.
The government should be increasing species at risk protections, not decreasing them. The proposed changes are incredibly shortsighted and will cause harm to Ontario.
Thank you.
