Bill 5 is an alarming step backward for environmental protection in Ontario. By repealing the Endangered Species Act, the province would be removing one of the most important tools we have to safeguard vulnerable wildlife. These protections exist for a reason: to prevent extinction, protect biodiversity, and preserve ecosystems that all life—including humans—depend on. Gutting this legislation prioritizes short-term economic interests over the long-term health of our environment and future generations. We cannot afford to roll back protections when climate change and habitat loss are already pushing species to the brink.
