I oppose the proposed changes to the Ontario Endangered Species Act. This change will not benefit anyone except for the premier and already wealthy developers. The change to the Act will negatively affect our natural biodiversity, scientific integrity and the long-term health of people and the planet.

The Act will weaken or remove protection for endangered species and habitat protection, again, for the benefit of developers not the community and not the environment or species at risk of extinction.

Removing the protections also means that our fragile eco-system is compromised. This in turn affects other species, our drinking water, our food production et al. Once the damage is done, the sensitive areas destroyed, there is no return. The destruction is irreversible. This is such a short sighted and greed based decision.

The government's decision to remove scientific oversight proves the decision is not based on fact or consideration to health, the future, Canadians, climate change or the importance of bio-diversity. This Act was quietly snuck in which shows a lack of transparency, accountability and a focus on self-serving intentions.

The Ontario government has a legal and moral responsibility to protect our natural resources and heritage. Not just for us now, but for future generations. The proposed changes do not meet the responsibility as a steward of our land and will cause irreparable harm. It isn't just about the endangered species, because the destruction collapses the entire eco-system. Each species has it's role in the eco-system. To remove one or a few may not seem to matter until you look at how each species is vital for healthy biodiversity.

The Ontario government must stop pandering to the rich developers and focus on protecting the eco-system and our endangered species as well as their habitat. For the planet. For Canadians. For Ontarians. For those today and all those tomorrow.
