As a concerned Canadian, I strongly oppose the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025 in their current form. Weakening habitat protections or shifting focus away from science-based recovery plans undermines decades of progress in biodiversity conservation. These changes risk prioritizing short-term economic gain over the long-term health of our ecosystems, wildlife, and future generations.
We need stronger—not diluted—legislation that holds industries accountable and centers Indigenous knowledge, science, and ecological integrity in every conservation decision. I urge decision-makers to reject these proposals and recommit to protecting the species and habitats that make Canada unique and vital.
