I am deeply concerned with how this proposed change would negatively impact wildlife in Ontario. The Ontario Endangered Species Act (ESA) is essential for protecting at-risk species, and maintaining the health of our ecosystems.
Current policies are based on facts and science. We should not prioritize convenience, business and infrastructure over scientific opinion. As per your own proposal summary: "The current approach to the protection and conservation of species at risk is complicated, takes too long to complete, and causes unnecessary delays and costs for housing, transit, and critical infrastructure." Canadians value the voices of our scientific researchers.
In the United States, The Trump administration has removed protections for over half of the National Forest System. The order covers more than 110 million acres of forest land and will fast-track timber production by removing National Environmental Policy Act regulations in the name of wildfire mitigation. President Donald Trump aims to increase timber production in the US by 25 percent.
While you may think the current approach is "slow" regarding the development of infrastructure, it would take far, far longer to restore the damage done to the environment than it would to review the welfare of an ecosystem prior to building. Please rethink this reform.
