Supplemental to the submission of the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition, Oct. 2, 2017

  1. The Carden Plain, a portion of which is located on the eastern edge of the county, is one of the most significant land formations in central Ontario, hosting a mosaic of alvars, grasslands, woodlands and wetlands. Parts of the Carden Plain and associated natural values are found within southern Ramara. Though the highest biodiversity is to be found just east of the county boundary, protection is essential to any natural heritage plan that recognized the inter-connectivity of natural habitats.

  2. The Black River, which has its lower sections within the Township of Ramara, experiences periodic damaging flooding, and the protection of wetlands and floodplains associated with this waterway should be a priority.

  3. We request that the provincial government establish a significant source of funding for strategic  land acquisition of key natural heritage areas by land trusts and conservation authorities, as part of a coordinated policy implementation program. As previous programs have shown, a modest provincial investment can leverage substantial private and federal funds to help achieve it environmental goals.
