I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, which proposes to significantly weaken Ontario’s environmental protections. Stripping away requirements for public consultation under the Environmental Bill of Rights is a dangerous step backward. These protections exist to ensure that development decisions are made transparently, with the input of the people most affected by them—Ontario residents.
Environmental protections are not red tape. They are safeguards against short-term thinking that leads to long-term harm—such as habitat loss, water contamination, increased flood risk, and worsening climate outcomes. By weakening these laws, this bill prioritizes rapid development over the health of our ecosystems and communities.
Ontarians deserve a say in what happens to their environment. Public consultation is a democratic right, not a bureaucratic inconvenience. Removing it silences communities and undermines trust in government.
I urge you to reject Bill 5 and commit to preserving the Environmental Bill of Rights. The long-term health, safety, and prosperity of Ontarians depend on sustainable decision-making, not rushed legislation that ignores the consequences.
