As a lifetime citizen of Ontario, I am absolutely against this proposal. This goes against science and puts the decisions on what is an endangered species in the hands of individuals who have 0 background and knowledge of ecology & biological systems. Reducing the word habitat to only include the immediate nest or den area of an animal will ultimately lead to the decimation of our ecosystem. Changing migratory patterns and pathways, ripping up protected green space that currently houses protected plant species, and not taking into consideration the food sources of animals will ultimately lead to Ontario being forever changed. If the government wants to provide more affordable housing for our ever growing population, urban sprawl at a rapid rate without taking all factors into consideration. Hold municipalities accountable instead! Hold business owners with several vacant properties accountable instead! I see it in my own city on a daily basis. Houses & buildings sitting empty for decades and landowners being allowed to have them sit empty and waste away when they could be used for other purposes.
Doug Ford and his cronies sitting in Queens Park don’t have the background or knowledge to decide what is an endangered species or what ecological repercussions lay ahead when deciding if their rich business friends building permit should go head. Leave that to the professionals who have dedicated their lives to learning about our environment and ecosystems. Leave that to the scientists!
