I strongly oppose Schedule 10 of Bill 5, which guts the Endangered Species Act and replaces it with the weak and discretionary Species Conservation Act. This move sacrifices science-based protections and hands developers a free pass to destroy critical habitats—putting vulnerable species at even greater risk.
Narrowing the definition of “habitat” and removing protections for migratory birds and aquatic species will accelerate biodiversity loss. Creating “special economic zones” that are exempt from environmental laws and Indigenous consultation rights is undemocratic and dangerous.
Ontario should be strengthening environmental protections, not dismantling them for short-term profit. I urge the government to withdraw Schedule 10 and uphold its responsibility to future generations and to Indigenous communities.
