I am deeply concerned about the Ontario government’s propose amendments of the endangered species act. These changes appear to prioritize development interest over the protection of the province’s, most vulnerable species and ecosystems. Reducing habitat protection timelines for endangered species could have devastating effects on survival. Similarly eliminating the 30 day review may lead to irreversible losses to already endangered species. The introduction of a pay to proceed system allows developers to pay into a conservation trust instead of adhering to strict environmental assessments, undermining the very purpose of the act. This approach modifies our natural heritage and sets a dangerous precedent where financial contributions can override ecological considerations. Furthermore, the proposed changes would grant, the government greater discretion over the listing of other species, potentially sidelining scientific expertise and favour of political, economic, and interest. In the midst of a global diversity crisis Ontario should be strengthening its commitment to environmental protection, not weakening it. I urge the government to reconsider these amendments and to engage in meaningful consultations with conservation experts, indigenous communities, and the public to ensure our naturally ecosystems are preserved for future generations.
