Proposed adjustments to the SARA (Species at Risk Act) threaten ecosystem and human well-being in the province of Ontario.
Reducing and eliminating steps in place to protect vulnerable communities and ecosystems, although it may decrease the time spent during the approval process, acts to directly violate the rights of Indigenous communities and the ecosystem balance in our province. Not only harming vulnerable groups, this adjustment will threaten the livelihoods of all Ontario citizens by putting their environment at risk of severe degradation through mismanagement of various important ecosystems, such as wetlands, water bodies, biodiverse forests, and more. These ecosystems have a primary role in the safety and well-being of human life in Ontario, regulating important processes such as water management, erosion reduction, carbon sequestration, and more. The downfall of the health of these important systems will directly result in the downfall of the health of the citizens of Ontario.
