I oppose Bill 5.
I want strong environmental protections for endangered species
I oppose short cuts for industry with no public oversight.
I oppose overriding the law in special economic zones.
I strongly oppose Bill 5. This bill undermines democratic environmental decision-making by allowing exemptions from Ontario’s foundational environmental laws, including the Endangered Species Act, in designated “special economic zones.” These zones could be used to fast-track industrial development without proper public consultation or environmental oversight.
I want to see strong, science-based protections for endangered species — not weakened laws that cater to short-term industrial interests. Ontario’s biodiversity and ecosystems are already under pressure from climate change, habitat loss, and pollution. Bill 5 will only accelerate that damage.
By removing requirements for public notice, comment, and transparency, this bill erodes public trust and removes the checks and balances that are essential in a democracy. I oppose giving industries the ability to bypass environmental regulations behind closed doors.
Environmental laws exist to protect the common good, and they should not be sacrificed for unchecked economic interests. I urge the government to reject Bill 5 and uphold Ontarians' right to a healthy environment, meaningful participation, and accountable governance.
