Bill 5, the so-called "Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025" does nothing to protect Ontario. Certainly not endangered species and ecosystems. Nor clean energy and Indigenous rights. This "new approach" is a disastrous loss for the environment and Ontarians' future, and a gain only for corruption and Doug Ford's developer buddies.
Habitat destruction is the main driver of biodiversity loss. Ontario’s current Endangered Species Act includes habitat protection provisions for threatened and endangered species. But to “unleash” development, Bill 5 would remove these protections, substituting absurd definitions of plant and animal habitat.
We must not repeal repeal Ontario’s existing Endangered Species Act, 2007. We must not give exemptions to anyone (“trusted proponents”—that's an obscene joke) from obeying all existing laws.
We must stop Bill 5—it is full of bad ideas for Ontario.
