These changes, additions, and obvious omissions entail too much information that has NOT been examined properly by accredited nature researchers and environmental scientists. Too much, too quickly.
The whole Bill needs to be re-examined under the auspices of conservation organizations like Ontario Nature, Sierra Club, Eco-Justice, because for one thing, the protection provided to endangered species in this new Bill has been gutted.
Putting the interests of the economy over the interests of the environment will be disastrous, and as a consequence, there will be no economy in the end because the environment supports the economy.
It introduces a new Special Economic Zones Act, 2025. This Act would exempt so-called “trusted proponents” from obeying all existing laws in a given geographic area. Who would be the "trusted proponent"? Very dangerous approach.
Recovery plans have been eliminated and science-based conservation is hardly mentioned.
Mr. Ford, this new bill is so watered-down that I fear for the Ontario environment going forward.
