Using the excuse that current approach to the protection and conservation of species at risk is complicated, takes too long to complete, and causes unnecessary delays and costs for housing, transit, and critical infrastructure is shameful. Imagine comparing a lengthy consultation period against the possible extermination of several species!
Bill 5, as it is currently written takes us backwards decades by replacing strategic planning with a piece meal approach and poor to non-existent support of species management science. The definition of habitat for species already at risk has been minimized to the point of being worthless. Data collection is being abandoned, so other species may well slip into endangered numbers without even our knowledge.
Our fragile populations deserve so much more.
