I am writing to object to the proposed exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights. It will remove the right of the people of Ontario to learn of permits relating to the Ontario Place project and to comment on them. This is an unacceptable lack of transparency and accountability essentially giving the government carte blanche.
The Environmental Bill of Rights ensures that Ontario's environment is protected for future generations. Thousands of Ontarians have raised legitimate concerns relating to protection of the waterfront. They have provided well researched critiques and put forward alternatives for the government’s consideration. This Bill not only deprives citizens of their rights but the government of valuable community engagement and input.
The proposal is not in the public interest, damages the waterfront site and benefits the interests of private foreign companies and investors over the needs of the people and the environment. It is shameful and shortsighted that the government is exercising political opportunism to weaken environmental protection regarding the Ontario Place project, and other developments at this crucial time.
We must not ignore protection of the environment and cast away protection of species at risk in favour of economic development. It does not have to be an either or situation. We need to find a balance that continues to prioritize the environment and species at risk for a healthy future.
