Taken directly from this website, “The current approach to the protection and conservation of species at risk is complicated, takes too long to complete, and causes unnecessary delays and costs for housing, transit, and critical infrastructure.”
This couldn’t be more wrong. The approach we currently take to protecting species at risk should be improved upon, but not by simplifying it, cutting corners, and streamlining the process to build faster. If anything we should be more stringent. We are living in an unpredictable and uncertain time and it is CRITICAL to prioritize protecting the province’s biodiversity. Now is not the time to be cutting corners. We are lucky in Ontario to have the natural spaces we do and it is OUR JOB to protect it.
I work directly in this field. I am an environmental consultant and I can speak from experience when I say that these regulations are necessary. They are so very necessary because they allow us to protect these species from harm. It’s complicated and it takes time because ecological systems and the species that inhabit them are also complicated. Let scientists do their job to protect the gift of biodiversity that this province still has left. Don’t be the administration on the wrong side of history that ruined it for everyone else.
