We are currently undergoing the 6th great extinction event on earth. This time the loss of species is man made and will eventually involve ourselves if we cannot change our priorities. Our current Endangered Species Act was considered a gold standard. Now our government is proposing the Species Conversation Act which weakens habitat protections and clears the way for development in sensitive areas. This is being done under the guise of economic development and hits a new low in the government's lack of understanding of the importance of biodiversity and healthy ecosystems in the long-term quality of life for people in this province. Scrapping environmental protections to be able to increase resource extraction or build more sprawling housing developments is the opposite direction we need to take. It is critical for a livable future for our children and grandchildren to make environmental protection a priority. The ignorance displayed in this bill is heartbreaking. I thought we were trying to take Trump on. Instead we are emulating his strategy.
