This Bill which allows for Special Economic Zones that can be fast tracked for development in protected areas, and take precedence over environmental concerns and endangered species protections is short sighted and ill conceived. Our environment that makes Ontario a great place to live is being eroded by development policies that allow roads, development for industry and residence and expansion of resource extraction at the expense of natural habitat, wildlife corridors and greenspace.
It is essential for the government to take the lead in prioritizing sustainable growth that protects natural ecosystems, which in turn serve to
-maintain and filter water so we have a source of clean water,
-buffer extreme weather
-maintain topsoil and good growing areas for agricultural and feeding people
- support functioning diverse ecosystems that continue to make Ontario a great place to live and invest in.
Wise investing and growth are what's needed, even more careful consideration of the impacts of development and extraction are necessary as continued development makes our natural environment increasingly fragile.
I urge you to reject Bill 5.
