These ammendments to the ESA and proposed Species Conservation Act do not have conservation at the forefront. Doug Ford's government failed when the "pay to slay" legislation was passed and it turns out none of the money from these ammendments ever went to species conservation. Why is this going to be any different. Especially with the government taking more control in these changes.
Having the government decide the fate of species when Doug Ford doesn't prioritize protection is dangerous. Not only that, but indigenous knowledge and scientific opinion can be completely disregarded. This does not align with Canada's reconciliation goals and will not provide a good outcome for our species. This is a scary proposal for legislation and gives the government all the power instead of experts in the field and indigenous peoples.
