I am concerned that contamination of the Sydenham River from this proposed landfill could have devastating consequences for Dresden and surrounding communities. Here’s what’s at stake:
Threat to Drinking Water – The Sydenham River is a vital water source for residents and farms. Pollution from landfill runoff could introduce toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and bacteria into the water supply, making it unsafe for consumption.
Damage to Agriculture – Local farmers rely on clean water for irrigation. Contaminants could seep into the soil, affecting crop yields and livestock health. Studies have shown that landfills can introduce carcinogens like benzene and toluene into agricultural land.
Harm to Wildlife – The Sydenham River is home to over 20 species at risk, including the Eastern spiny softshell turtle and Salamander mussel. Pollution could destroy critical habitats, pushing these species closer to extinction.
Economic Impact – If contamination occurs, property values could plummet, and businesses dependent on clean water—such as farming and tourism—could suffer. Residents may also face increased costs for water treatment and environmental cleanup.
Health Risks – Exposure to polluted water can lead to respiratory issues, skin conditions, and long-term illnesses. Airborne pollutants from landfill operations could further degrade local air quality.
Loss of Recreation – The Sydenham River is a popular spot for fishing derbies, canoeing, and kayaking. Contamination could make these activities unsafe, harming local tourism and community events.
