I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights for the development activities at Ontario Place. This legislation is alarmingly anti-democratic, removing the right of Ontarians to be advised of, or to comment on, any required permits related to Ontario Place's redevelopment.
It is unacceptable that our government create exception zones for environmental regulation and related democratic participation in decisions that will have impacts for present and future generations of Ontarians. This measure is nothing short of authoritarian, and brings our Ontario government into the same league of anti-democratic dismantling of public institutions as we see currently with the Trump presidency.
In the strongest possible terms, I urge our government to reconsider this course of action. Ontario Place and the Toronto lakeshore is a place for all Ontarians. Environmental regulations and public consultation are the backbone of measures to ensure that these treasures remain intact for present and future generations to enjoy.
