I am concerned and deeply opposed to Bill 5's Proposed Amendments to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act.

The proposed exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993, would eliminate the requirement for public notice and comment on provincial permits and approvals related to the Ontario Place redevelopment. This move undermines the principles of environmental accountability and public participation that are foundational to responsible governance.

By removing the obligation for public consultation, these amendments disregard the voices of Ontarians who have a vested interest in the future of Ontario Place. Public engagement is essential in ensuring that redevelopment projects reflect the needs and values of the community.

The Auditor General's 2024 report highlighted issues with the Ontario Place redevelopment process, describing it as "not fair, transparent or accountable," with costs escalating by $1.8 billion to a total of $2.2 billion. Implementing further exemptions without addressing these concerns exacerbates the lack of transparency and erodes public confidence.

Ontario Place is recognized as a cultural heritage landscape with significant architectural and historical value. Exempting the redevelopment from heritage protections threatens the preservation of this iconic site, which holds cultural and recreational significance for the people of Ontario.
