Bill 5 undermines the democratic process and is one the worst pieces of legislation Ontario has ever seen. Industries will just have to register in order to do what they like without clear conditions to prevent harms to species.
Instead of strengthening the Endangered Species Act during a global biodiversity crisis, Bill 5 will scrap the Endangered Species Act. Many of these species are in great decline, once they are gone, they are not coming back. This is catastrophic for Ontario's future.
Bill 5 does not mention the rights of Indigenous peoples for consultation even once. Listing species as endangered will be subject to partisan interference and no longer an independent science based assessment. And ANY place in Ontario can be designated as a 'special economic' zone. There is no transparency.
This is a gateway to more terrible projects like the spa that destroyed Ontario Place. It must be stopped, for the sake our childrens' future.
