I strongly oppose the removal of the comprehensive environmental assessment requirements for the proposed Eagle’s Nest mine project in response to changes to the scope of the project through the proposed Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025. There is no compelling environmental rationale or persuasive evidence to justify the proposed project exemptions from the EAA. Exempting this project is inconsistent with the public interest purpose of the EAA, which is to ensure the protection, conservation and wise management of the environment for the betterment of all Ontarians. This is the only vehicle by which the safety and continued health of the environment around the Eagle’s Nest project can be assured. A healthy community in Ontario is totally dependent on a healthy environment in Ontario, the two are inextricably linked. Schedule 3 must be removed from Bill 5 to ensure that a comprehensive environmental assessment is completed for the Eagle’s Nest mining project, and that the environment around the mine is not compromised in any way.
