I’m writing to firmly oppose the plan to exempt Ontario Place from the Environmental Bill of Rights. These exemptions would block the public from being informed about or weighing in on environmental permits related to the site, whether for construction on the grounds or beyond it.

This move undermines the very purpose of the Environmental Bill of Rights, which was created to ensure Ontario’s natural environment is protected through public oversight. Ontario Place, in particular, is a treasured and sensitive area. People across the province have already voiced legitimate concerns and proposed constructive alternatives grounded in care for the environment and community needs. Ignoring this input means silencing informed public voices and discarding valuable perspectives.

This exemption does not serve the public good. It endangers a key piece of Toronto’s waterfront, weakens environmental accountability, and appears aimed at benefiting private, foreign interests. In the midst of a growing climate and biodiversity emergency, this is a step in the wrong direction—both for the environment and for democratic participation.
