In a previous submission to the ERO I spent considerable time attempting to find out what industry association or group had asked for the change to be made. I was surprised that I could find just one request from several years previous. Unfortunately, I do not have time with this request to find out which industry groups have been requesting them.
I do wonder that I don't see in the press any industry groups coming out loudly in favour of these changes. I find that worrisome as many changes have been made in recent years to boost housing and yet the housing supply has stalled. I am wondering if these changes are being proposed by the Ford government without consultation with industry in which case they will likely miss the mark. The Ford government will be adding the redtape it so famously wants to get rid of.
I find it puzzling that industry groups have not organized and made studies to point out how private companies can speed up their side of the permitting equation. It seems rather one-sided that government is to blame.
In the rush to meet present economic challenges I do not see anyone appointed to defend the interests of future generations from 100, 1,000 or more years from now.
In the rush to get this legislation in place, no regulations have been proposed. The proposal indicates that no impacts are anticipated at this stage of the game. Without knowing what is actually being proposed in the regulations it seems we are being asked to trust. Another business practise is to trust but verify and without any ability to verify the regulations I must disagree wholeheartedly with this proposal.
