I am opposed to this proposed legislation as it undermines the rule of law and fundamental democratic norms ion our country. To allow the government to designate "special economic zones" that are exempt from provincial laws and municipal bylaws sets up a regime where 'trusted proponents" will be able to carry out their planned industrial projects without regard to any environmental and public safety protection. There would be no accountability or oversight in such a regime. Th executive branch of government could simple allow whomever they decide to do whatever they want in the "special economic zones" in order to expedite economic development. This totally undermines environmental rights as they currently exist in our province and will result in the creation of sacrifice zones, destroying vital habitat and sensitive ecologies, necessary for climate stability. It also tramples on Indigenous Treaty rights.
This Bill must not be enacted.
